And the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi! Be it civil rights or social reforms, Gandhi has been an inspiration for non-violent movements across the world. He remained committed to his belief in non-violence even under the worst circumstances and insurmountable challenges and led India to freedom. He was the catalyst if not the initiator of three of the major revolutions of the 20th century: the movements against colonialism, racism, and violence.
Gandhi (1869-1948) was an Indian lawyer, anti-colonial nationalist and political ethicist who employed nonviolent resistance to lead the successful campaign for India's independence from British rule and in turn inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. In the eyes of millions of his fellow Indians, Gandhi was the Mahatma (“Great Soul”).
