The professional kitchen is the last refuge of the misfit. It’s a place for people with bad pasts to find a new family.
-Anthony Bourdain
Anthony Bourdain has been called the “original rock star of the culinary world" and the "Hemingway of gastronomy." His birthday is June 25th. He died in 2018. His CNN show “Parts Unknown” included a stop in Greenfield MA in 2014!
Check out a snippet of Anthony talking at The RECOVER Project and see more about the episode here. He also visited People's Pint and Hope & Olive!
He attended the Culinary Institute of America, graduating in 1978. While most of his early jobs in restaurants involved tasks like dishwashing, he steadily moved up in the ranks of the kitchen. By 1998, Bourdain had become the executive chef at Brasserie Les Halles in New York City. Around this time, he was also chronicling his experiences in the “culinary underbelly.” He wrote candidly about his heroin addiction.
Chef Anthony visited our fair city
He recognized it as Gritty
He Loved Our Food - all the Flavors
His words we truly Savor
Gone too soon that's a fact
Yet we still learn from his worldly artifacts
