Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15 and ends on October 15. President Lyndon B. Johnson first introduced National Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968. In 1988, Congress passed a law to extend it into a monthlong holiday during Ronald Reagan's presidency. September 15 is the date when five Latin American countries—Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua—earned their independence from Spain in 1821.
Check out the stories in OprahDaily's "The Power of Us" -- a conversation about how Hispanic and Latinx culture has shaped America.
